Creating an open innovation process with results.

Currently we see how there are already several corporations that are venturing into the possibility of seeking solutions outside their organization by carrying out open innovation. We have seen success stories, in which companies have managed to integrate with the ecosystem, overcoming the different barriers, for the discovery and support of disruptive technologies. However, many failures have also been seen, in which companies have not been able to incorporate these technologies into their business operations, or even in some cases without being able to scale the solutions in different markets.

In both internal and open processes, the reasons are generally the same: the lack of prior strategic planning and the lack of synchronization with the different business units. In this way, the activities carried out with the ecosystem do not have a defined strategic focus, and worse still, they lack a potential sponsor that could ensure the acceleration and subsequent scaling of the technologies discovered.

To really get a effective open innovation strategy It is essential first to have a well-defined challenge that allows for clear guidelines to be provided on the needs detected by the company. Although it sounds quite simple to achieve, in many cases it is not. In this context, in INNOVA360 We envision Internal Innovation as a key preliminary step in determining the challenges where the ideas of the collaborators, with a global view of the environment, will become more limited future challenges that will feed the open innovation process. This internal innovation process, in turn, will make it possible to obtain the main sponsors of the technologies to be developed and implemented, facilitating deadlines and obtaining budgets for their future incorporation into the company.

From a specific requirement and with clear guidelines is that we can give way to the search in the development ecosystem that can solve our problem. This is where it becomes essential to be able to look for different collaborators who, together, can achieve a better approximation to the required solution, since many times start-ups by themselves may not be prepared, or have the infrastructure to provide a solution. to large-scale projects.

In this process of devising innovative solutions that respond to corporate challenges It is important to generate meeting instances between different actors (start-ups, research centers, large companies, universities, etc.) in order to identify possible points of convergence and synergies between them in order to create attractive developments for the sponsoring companies.

The objective is to create prototypes with a high degree of approximation to the needs of the project and its subsequent technological development. It is at this point that care must be taken to create attractive business models for the participants as well as the governance models that will govern the project in its implementation, and even more so to be able to count on a process articulator.

It is this open innovation model, which starts from the base of the collaborators within the organization to provide a better visualization of the needs, until reaching the relationship with the ecosystem in which the company is inserted to link different actors in the resolution of specific challenges, which will make it possible to bring to life tangible solutions to real needs with immediate sponsors.

It should be noted that this model of tangible opportunities for immediate solutions is adjusted to something that many could consider as an 'improvement of existing processes' or continuous improvement, which competes in importance with the 'disruptive innovation' that is so longed for. However, it is part of the process and, in many cases, the way to go before implementing major changes.

We must not fail to consider the importance given to Open Innovation as a mechanism to help the company visualize trends in unknown or transversal sectors that could give a broader vision to companies. emerging technologies to apply in their operations, or simply as a way to see the future, but this will be the subject of our next blog.
